What a bathroom showroom actually gives you
Edinburgh has plenty of showrooms — some big national names, some smaller Scottish chains. They're useful for one main reason: you can walk in, see a bath in the flesh, sit on a WC, feel the weight of a tap. If you're undecided on style, that's genuinely hard to beat online.
Most showrooms then offer a design service and a fitting package through their own installer or a subcontracted crew. The trade-off is price. You're paying for the retail markup on every product plus a project margin on top of the fitter's day rate.
What an independent fitter gives you
An independent Edinburgh bathroom fitter — like me — sources the same brands at trade prices and passes most of that saving on. You get one point of contact from survey to snag, no handover between "designer" and "installer", and a quote based on your actual flat, not a showroom template.
The catch: you don't get a big showroom to wander round. Good fitters solve that by pointing you at local suppliers (City Plumbing, Plumbase, Porcelanosa in Edinburgh) where you can see products in person, then order through us at trade.
How the money usually compares
- Showroom package: convenience and a single invoice; typically 15–30% more all-in for the same spec.
- Independent fitter: lower total cost, more input from you on choices, one person accountable for the whole job.

How to pick well in Edinburgh
- Ask who is actually on the tools. Showrooms often subcontract — get the fitter's name and see their previous work.
- Get a written, itemised quote. "Bathroom package £9,995" is not a quote; it's a headline.
- Check tenement experience. Fitters who mostly do new-builds get caught out by lath-and-plaster, bouncing joists, and shared soil stacks.
- Insist on a site visit before signing. Anyone quoting off photos is guessing.
- Ask about tanking, joist strengthening, and waste routing specifically. Vague answers are a red flag.
